Blurb:
Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote…and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

My review:
“The Shining” was my first read of Stephen King and it wasn’t up to my expectations. The story revolves around the haunted hotel “Overlook” for which Jack Torrance was appointed as a Caretaker during winter. Jack along with his wife Wendy and his son Danny stayed in the hotel quarters.
Jack the protagonist has an unstable mind, he loves his family but at the same time, the demon inside him hurts them even before their stay in the haunted hotel. There were too many thoughts going inside Jack’s mind which were described in most of the chapters that were annoying and boring after a certain point.
I like the parts when Danny encounters scary things. That scenes were very well described and definitely it sent a chill down my spine. But sad thing is that those creepy contents arise after half of the book. One have to cross all the boring inside-Jack-mind chapters to get into the actual horror. As this is a horror book I expected more horrifying elements and got disappointed.
For me this is not a page turner book and I didn’t feel interesting while reading the book. I like the elements about the person’s shine and the climax intrigued me which I loved. But other than that I don’t like this book. I know lot of people like/love this book but these are my opinions and I can’t deny it. The only reason I finished this book is that I don’t have a heart to DNF a book (still now).
