Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Blurb:

They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

My Review:

This book was gripping from the start. There were many twists and turns in the book which I didn’t saw coming and I totally loved it. Fantasy is my favourite genre and this book is more than just magic. There were lots of realistic emotional scenes that made me love this book even more.

There were symbols and types of magics printed in the book, on seeing that I thought the magical system might be difficult to understand but It wasn’t. It was too easy to understand and I loved the connector Magic. The fights involving magics are very well described and I loved it.

The chapters were of three character’s pov. Zélie, the main protagonist lacks self-confidence, but at the same time she was brave in situations where she have to be. The pain she had gone through when she lost her mother had just broken my heart. The author’s excellent writing skill made me feel the pain that the characters are going through.

Inan, the prince, who wants to become a good King in future was manipulated by his father. His father is one such character who I hate from the bottom of my heart. Inan thought that everything his father had told him was right until he met Zélie. I love the connection between Zélie and Inan even though it happened within a short interval of time.

Amari’s (the princess) friendship with Binta was so beautiful and it touched my heart. Zélie, Inan and Amari were not the strong characters but I love them for bringing up the courage deep down from their heart to protect what or who they love. Tzain who is the brother of Zélie is the strongest of all. He is that brother who would do anything to save his sister.

So that’s the truth that I love all the characters, the plot, the magic and each and everything about this book. The climax was a cliffhanger and the third book haven’t released yet so I’m little afraid to pick the second one. Recommended for fantasy and non-fantasy lovers.
