House of Earth and Blood (#1 Crescent City) by Sarah J.Maas

My review:

“House of Earth and Blood” was the biggest book I have ever read. I have read many fantasy books and loved the other author’s writing styles. But I have become a fan of Sarah J. Maas’s writing style. There was a character in the book who dies at the very beginning and had a very little part in the story but I longed for that character to come alive and cried for that person’s death. That’s when I realized how beautiful and lively Maas’s writing was.

This was my first time reading a book filled with so many supernatural characters like Angels, Fae, Werewolves, Shapeshifters, Mermaid, Witches, Demons and Vampires. It was a new experience picturing the characters with different colour wings as they were found a lot in the book. The world-building was great and I particularly loved the name of the places. This book also fits in a murder mystery. Over 800 pages and not once I had guessed the person and his intentions who was behind the murder.

Bryce Quinlan, the female protagonist of this story was the sassiest character I have ever read. Her bonding with her friend Danika was so heart touching. How much she missed her best friend Danika in every second of her life was so well displayed through Maas’s excellent writing. It hit my heart hard that all our desires and hopes could vanish in a heartbeat in the name of fate. I don’t think it is possible to have a friend like Bryce in real life but if it is then I wish to have one.

The male protagonist Hunt Athalar was an angel with grey wings (yeah!! I love those wings) who was seen as a cruel monster by the whole world except in the eyes of Bryce. I love the way his character was portrayed. There was a slow burn romance between Hunt and Bryce. I loved the gradual growth in their relationship from haters to a friend to lovers. As this was a big book, it was even greater to read the slow progress of love between them.

Ruhn Danaan, brother of Bryce. He had so many titles to add after his name but he loves to be called as her brother. Ruhn was more like a supporting character showing up so rarely in the book. But he is my favourite character because of his brotherly love towards Bryce. He is so much protective and caring towards Bryce which I loved the most. Whenever she was in danger he would be there in a heartbeat to protect her. One thing I hate is that he had so little scene in the whole book. I wish to read more of him in the upcoming books in the series.

What I love most in this book was more importance was given to every character. A side character’s death that made me cry all night until I get heartache is the very main reason I loved this book from the core of my heart. This is the wonder of Maas’s writing you would fall in love with the character without even realizing. I can’t disclose the character’s name as it would be a spoiler.

As this is really a massive book I was afraid before started reading it but not once I felt bored while reading it. I love this book more than I thought I would. I couldn’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series. I would give this book Infinity stars if possible.

Favorite quotes:

Through love, all is possible.

Loyal unto death and beyond.

That’s the point of it, Bryce. Of life. To live, to love, knowing that it might all vanish tomorrow. It makes everything that much more precious.
