Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

I have been wanting to read this book for so long. One, because of the cover. Two, because it has an LBGTQ+ rep. I have read more than five LGBTQ books and I did have higher expectations in this book. But I didn’t love it as much as I think. At the same time, it wasn’t a disappointing read.

Alex, son of President of US falls in love with Prince Henry of England. It falls under enemies to lovers trope. That’s one of the things I hate in this book. First of all, they were not enemies. One moment Alex hating Henry then you blink your eyes “Ta-da” they were kissing each other. It happened so fast and so it ruined the whole enemies-to-lovers trope which is one of my favourite tropes.

More than half of the book was filled with “romantic rendezvous” of Alex and Henry. It WAS TOO MUCH TO HANDLE. I don’t feel the love between them until 3/4 of the book. I did love the banter which made the book likeable. One character I liked is June (Alex sister) who was so supportive of his brother and I love her for it.

The other most important thing I love in this book is that the way author had described the struggles and pressures a famous/popular person goes through about their gender identity and the stress that drowns them out in pretending to be someone for the benefit of the community and family. This is why I am giving this book a four-star rating.

I loved the last part of the book. I wish the whole book was like the last 25% of it. The climax was nothing unusual. It is so predictable. Overall, it was a good read but not so great.

My rating : ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
