What Fresh Hell is This?! by J. A. C Beardmore | Book Review

Genres: Supernatural, Thriller, Murder Mystery

Synopsis: (From amazon)

Have you ever wondered where horror stories come from?
Some people believe they come from primordial fears that have gotten out of hand, or else been changed through many years of retelling by countless different people, but Agent Sarah Mitchel of the Tactical Homeland Unique Missions Bureau knows the truth. That truth is that they’re all very, very real. They happened, or will, and it’s the job of people like Sarah to make sure the antagonists of those stories don’t get too out of hand. At least, that was her job. Now, after messing up one too many times, she’s been demoted. She is a pencil pusher and first point of contact for these Nightmarish creatures, and she hates every second of it.

Her career has taken a decidedly downward turn and, if that weren’t enough, it appears she’s found herself at the centre of a murderous plot to end all life on Earth. And you thought you had a bad job. Will this incompetent agent figure out who’s behind it all in time? Is everything as it appears? Can you really trust someone who’s killed more people than you’ve had warm dinners? Only time will tell.

So, jump in, watch your step and get ready for a rollercoaster ride that’ll knock your socks off of your feet and into another dimension populated exclusively by satanic satire.
Welcome to the THUMBverse!

My Review:

What Fresh hell is this?! by J.A.C Beardmore is a mixture of supernatural thriller, and sci-fi with murder mystery as its main theme. So basically this book has a bundle of genres I love. I would say this book did justice to all the genres.

Sarah Mitchell, our protagonist, is a secret agent in Tactical Homeland Unique Missions Bureau, short-form THUMB. Her work is to handle supernatural events happening in real life. At first, I didn’t like her attitude. There was this scene where her partner died right in front of her, but Sarah didn’t even feel sorry about it. This part stayed in the back of my mind throughout the book. Maybe that’s the reason I neither loved nor hated her.

The plot revolves around Sarah trying to solve the murders in her workplace. I loved how the author carried on with the mystery of who might be the murderer till the very end. Also, I always love it when the writing style is more dialogical rather than monologue, this book is filled with dialogical style writing.

My favorite character is Jasper, the rat. He is an experimental rat with an IQ of 147. Chapters were switched between him and Sarah. I loved his chapters more, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like the other chapters. The murder mystery plot kept me hooked till the end. I just wished to see more of him.

The cover and the title could have been better. Other than that, I completely enjoyed the book. The climax was good, and it was a perfect ending to the story. As I said earlier, this book is a mixture of many genres. In one part, it gives the vibes of Men In Black movies. In short, I loved the whole experience of reading this book.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 / 5
